Biology can vary slightly depending on the species. On average, Gulls will have 1 brood per year with 3-5 eggs. There is about a 1-month incubation period and a 1.5 month nestling period. Young are born in the spring.

Nests are built or dug along shore lines or in other open, safe areas such as roof tops, using grasses, sand, sticks, seaweed, feathers, rope, and even plastics.

  1. stamping their feet in a group to imitate rainfall and trick earthworms to come to the surface.
  2. Seagulls are attentive and caring parents. The male and female pair for life and they take turns incubating the eggs, and feeding and protecting the chicks.
  3. Seagulls can drink both fresh and salt water. Most animals are unable to do this, but seagulls have a special pair of glands right above their eyes which is specifically designed to flush the salt from their systems through openings in the bill.
  4. Seagull droppings pose a serious health threat. Droppings can contaminate food and carry many potential diseases such as E coli and salmonella.
  5. This coupled with the unsightly presence of their droppings on and around structures show the importance of preventing activity.

Do Gulls Migrate?
