Pest control services are called in constantly to deal with bird infestation issues. Most people think of pest control management for insects, spiders and rodents, but the truth is, for many commercial spaces, the dangers are above as well as below.
House sparrows, common cowbirds and pigeons are some the pest species of birds. For businesses in more urban areas, it's likely that pigeons are the danger.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is no stranger to pigeons and explained that there are many diseases that the birds can carry and give to humans. Histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis are two fungal diseases that these pest birds carry and can transmit through feces. Salmonella and others are also possible to contract when pigeons or other pest birds are infesting your commercial space.
Another reason why commercial space owners or lessees may want to consider getting rid of their pest bird or pigeon infestation is because the birds can harm workers and buildings in ways other than disease, the National Pest Management Association explained.
"Pigeons are filthy birds, causing disease and damage. Their droppings are known for triggering human slips and falls, as well as accelerating the aging of structures and statues. This makes it imperative to get rid of pigeons in highly trafficked areas," the NPMA explained.
In order to prevent pest birds from settling in your commercial space, it's smart to limit potential shelters. This can mean everything from filling in cracks and patching holes in the eaves, to covering an entire open section of a steeple or rafters. Pigeons, starlings and other pest birds like to feed on human trash. So, just like with rats and insects, make sure you have a secure waste system, especially from above.
If you already have a pest bird problem, contact a professional pest control service to get rid of the birds. These services can include reallocating nests, humanely repelling the existing birds and installing ways to prevent further infestations.
