How to Keep Fruit Flies Out of Your Home

Fruit Fly

Fruit flies can quickly become an annoying nuisance hovering around fruits, vegetables, and your trash. They seem to appear out of nowhere and multiply very quickly. Luckily, you can implement several tips to say goodbye to fruit flies in your home.

  1. Fruit flies are attracted to ripe, rotting, or decaying fruit and produce and fermented goods like beer, liquor, and wine. Eliminate their potential food source by throwing out overripe produce as it’s a magnet for fruit flies or better yet, compost your fruit and vegetables if possible. Just be sure to keep your compost as far as possible from your home as insects such as fruit flies are part of the composting process.
  2. Store fruits and vegetables properly. Store ripe fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator to slow the ripening process and reduce exposure.
  3. Fix your window screens. Fruit flies can enter your home through tiny cracks and openings.
  4. Clean your kitchen regularly. Wipe down countertops, tables, or other food preparation surfaces to eliminate food residue. Take out the trash daily, and don’t forget to clean your garbage bins to remove any potential breeding grounds for fruit flies.
  5. Rinse recyclables for disposal as fruit flies are attracted to the sugary residue left behind in the containers.
  6. Finally, utilize natural home remedies. Place a small bowl with apple cider vinegar on your countertop. The flies are attracted to the vinegar but unable to escape the soapy surface.

With these simple strategies, you can eliminate fruit flies and enjoy a pest-free home.
